Laramee proposed a series of visionary projects that address water issues in Ohio. Numerous sites and watersheds have been affected by radiotoxins in this region of the Unites States by Department of Defense facilities for producing nuclear weapons.

In 2011, the Synapse funded a residency for Laramee to work with two computer scientists, Kalyan Thokala and Yingcai Xiao. Using data from the Department of Energy database, they mapped the sample wells by depth, where the following radioactive isotopes were detected: plutonium, uranium, radium, thorium, technicium. These radioactive isotopes have entered the Great Miami Aquifer. The Fernald site is surrounded by agricultural land. The next step in our project will use data from wells on the surrounding agricultural areas.

The final map project will show the extent of the radioactive plume underground.

The project title is "Invisible Fire" and is part of a larger series of works which comprise a national atlas of radioactive waste sites.

Copyright 2011 Eve Andree Laramee. Located at the village of Paguate on the Laguna Pueblo near the Grants, New Mexico uranium mining district, it was operated by the Anaconda Mining Company (ARCO - Atlantic Richfield) from 1953 to 1982. The Pueblo of Laguna set up a company to oversee the reclamation of the mine, as no standards for such existed when the mine closed in 1982. The mine lease covered 7,868 acres, and by December 2006, 33,000,000 cubic yards of earth were again displaced to reclaim 2,700 acres. Between 1949 and 1989, uranium mines in the Western United States produced more than 225,000,000 tons of uranium ore. This activity affected a large number of Native American nations, including the Navajo, Laguna, Zuni, Southern Ute, Ute Mountain, Hopi, Acoma and other Pueblo cultures. During the “Uranium Boom” in the Grants area of New Mexico, many of these peoples worked in the 1,200 uranium mines. Others worked locally in the almost 4,000 mines, mills and processing plants in the Four Corners region (where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado converge). These workers were not only poorly paid, they were seldom informed of the dangers of working with uranium nor were they given appropriate protective gear. Due to the Cold War demand for increasingly destructive and powerful nuclear weapons, these laborers were both exposed to and brought home (in the form of dust on their clothing and skin) large amounts of radiation. Epidemiologic studies of the families of these workers have shown increased incidents of radiation-induced cancers, miscarriages, cleft palates and other birth defects. The government, mine owners, scientific and health communities were all well aware of the hazards of working with radioactive materials at this time. Diseases related to working in the mines include cancers of the lung, bone, stomach, brain and skin, as well as kidney and liver damage. After the mills were closed and torn down, some of the local people in the area used the contaminated rebar-reinforced concrete debris to build foundations for their houses, as these materials were left lying out in the open land. Uranium mining is one of many issues surrounding the environmental and health impact of atomic weapons and nuclear power. Others include the research, production and testing of atomic weapons, as well as the storage of waste from nuclear reactors.
These stories of our atomic legacy should not remain buried in the deserts of the Southwest, but rather be discussed in numerous venues by a wide range of individuals. We must question how "Atomic Age" events may have influenced evolutionary processes and produced genetic casualties in these communities caught in the crossfire of atomic war. Halfway to Invisible does not seek to propose a pat answer, conclusion or solution to these complex problems; rather, it proposes these questions: Is our atomic legacy producing genotoxic effects in indigenous human populations? If so, what is the extent of DNA damage, and how might this affect these populations in the future?

Halfway to Invisible – description of work
This multi-media installation includes several allegorical components:
• A reactive kinetic sculpture made from stainless steel laboratory animal cages.
• A video projection of the “comet assay” pattern (single cell gel electrophoresis) showing DNA breaking off from a cell exposed to uranyl acetate.
• A "researcher" equipment case containing an interpretive video on evolutionary processes, an light box with informational text, and Cold War era Civil Defense Geiger counter in a Halliburton case
• Sixty small light-boxes. One series include superimposed images of genome maps, woven baskets and images of cells, the other series contains images of extremophile organisms that have the property of surviving in extreme environments such as geothermal springs and the pools in which radioactive fuel rods from nuclear reactors are stored. These extremophile organisms may in fact be the beneficial allies needed to help remediate land and water that has been polluted with radioactive waste. On the other hand, bioengineering them to perform such tasks may but create new problems.
• An information archive in an aluminum box

The artist would like to acknowledge the following individuals: Courtney “scrap” Wrenn, Jamilah Abdul-Sabur, William Thomas Porter, Gregory Barsimian, Chelsea Noggle, Erika Wanenmacher, Mary Beath, Neal Reinalda, Bernard Klevickas. I thought the subject of some of the sessions would be of interest.

Creativity Conversation with E. O. Wilson and Rosemary Magee
3:00 p.m., Jones Room, Woodruff Library

As part of Emory’s series of Creativity Conversations, Wilson looks back at the significant mileposts on the road to becoming the “father of biodiversity.”

Keynote Address: E. O. Wilson,”Darwin and the Future of Biology”
7:00 p.m., Glenn Auditorium

One of the world’s greatest living scientists and ‘father of biodiversity’ reflects on the future of biology and its effects on our lives.

Friday, October 24
all events at the Emory Conference Center

“The Art of Seduction: Evolution, Sex, and the Public”
9:00–10:00 a.m.

Olivia Judson, New York Times columnist and one of the preeminent science writers of our time, explores the challenge of communicating evolutionary science to the public in a talk that is one part natural history, one part biology of sex, and one part personal anecdote.

Panel 1: Who Are We in Evolutionary Perspective?
10:30–noon

“Descended from apes?” That was the incredulous question that greeted Darwin’s On the Origin of Species following its publication in 1859. Now, nearly 150 years later, what have we learned about human similarities and differences from our closest genetic cousins, nonhuman primates?

Frans de Waal explores astonishing similarities between nonhuman primate and human behavior and cognition in areas once regarded as most distinctly and even nobly human, such as ethics, empathy, and altruism.

Todd Preuss suggests possible similarities and differences in the evolution and functions of brains in human and nonhuman primates. How does this research suggest new ways of approaching who we are and what our potential is?

Panel 2: How Can We Optimize Our Evolutionary Inheritance?
1:30–3:00 p.m.

What is the greatest influence on human health—nature or nurture? New research demonstrates that this is a dated dichotomy obscuring the mutual interaction between genes and environment. Genes, we are learning, are dynamically related in their operation to cues from the environment. How does new research on this exchange between genes and environments suggest ways to optimize our health individually as well as across generations and populations?

Carol Worthman explains the nature-nurture matrix and how it helps us to understand which human variations are normal and which may be the result of societal disparities.

Michelle Lampl probes the dynamic of genes and environment as it relates to children’s growth and their lifelong and inter-generational health.

Leslie Real looks at how evolutionary principles illuminate the rise of new diseases—such as HIV, Ebola, and SARs—and the drug resistance of more familiar diseases—such as TB and malaria. Encouragingly, these same principles provide a guide to protecting our global health.

Panel 3: Can We Engineer New Life?
3:30–5:00 p.m.

We speak of the “miracle of life” in appreciation of its wondrous nature and also because its origin remains a mystery. Considering that mystery, Darwin suggested in a letter in 1871 that life may have arisen “in some warm little pond, with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts, light, heat, electricity, &C. present.” Today, researchers are making progress toward understanding that “&C”—the chemical origins and processes that led to the emergence of life. The application of this research has enormous potential to enhance existing life forms and engineer new ones. Examples would include biofactories that produce new drugs, create energy sources, and consume pollution, as well as the fabrication of tissues and organs that may transform healthcare and even our experience of being human.

Nicholas Hud and David Lynn are heading a National Science Foundation-sponsored effort to advance an understanding of how life began and provide insight into a variety of ways that life could emerge and evolve in different environments.

Ichiro Matsumura studies the evolutionary capacities of proteins, a fundamental component of all living cells, and the possibilities of directing their evolution at the most basic biochemical level.Flying out of this Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12764063669252637782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4248824952525469956.post-37541130395834840712008-10-15T10:59:00.001-07:002008-10-15T10:59:59.479-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgca9NUhqQnTVhNnou3kQnFlAsHG6piKBVQRQ-b26CZT97Fnc_ol5RykIb3FV-6vHoGY00lyQzccoX8Km9E4wQsGy5JSZQtJu5Z8n1L_XTIpk_2FiIRMwICzf3sNnLEb79iX134N6W_80A/s400/80412278.gjndQiY0.IMG_277515elephantstitre.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257441946225818658" />Flying out of this Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12764063669252637782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4248824952525469956.post-1289316127805199132008-10-15T10:55:00.001-07:002008-10-15T10:56:12.819-07:00Welcome to MICA Water HoleThis is the blog space for the MICA Art & Ecology Research ClusterFlying out of this Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12764063669252637782noreply@blogger.com1
